Abstract

The understanding of the concept of numbers and addition among preschool students is dependent on teachers’ in-class teaching methods. This study was conducted to identify the understanding process among Islamic preschool students in Marang, Terengganu. The study was conducted using a qualitative approach through case study design. Data were taken from two periods of time, namely pre-test and post test. Data was collected through instruments such as teaching aids, LEGO sets, paper and recording tools. The respondends were six 6 year olds who were assigned by the school administrators. Thematic analysis was performed on the data obtained. The themes of understanding among the preschoolers was observed through logical-mathematical intelligence. The findings show that there are eight (8) themes of understanding of the concept of numbers and addition which are; using abstract symbols to represent a concept or object, seeing things based on quantity, demonstrating logical problem-solving skills, observing relations between objects, using numbers effectively in counting processes, producing inventions, manipulating numbers, quantity and operations in mathematical formulas, and communicating with teachers via a variety of methods. In conclusion, the study show that the students in Marang, Terengganu have logical-mathematical intelligence although in different levels. They are able to understand the concept of numbers and operation of addition introduced by the teacher. They observe things in learning Mathematics scientifically and empirically.

Kefahaman tentang konsep nombor dan operasi tambah dalam kalangan murid prasekolah adalah bergantung kepada kaedah pengajaran yang digunakan oleh guru ketika di dalam kelas. Kajian ini dijalankan untuk mengenal pasti kefahaman murid-murid prasekolah terhadap konsep nombor dan operasi tambah di sebuah tadika prasekolah Islam di Marang, Terengganu. Kajian dijalankan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif melalui reka bentuk kajian kes. Data diambil dengan dua tempoh masa iaitu dengan kaedah pre-test dan post test. Proses pengumpulan data menggunakan  instrumen-instrumen seperti alat bantu mengajar (ABM), mainan lego, pensil, kertas kosong dan alat perakam. Responden kajian terdiri daripada enam orang murid prasekolah berumur 6 tahun yang telah ditetapkan oleh pentadbir sekolah. Analisis tema dilakukan ke atas data-data yang diperoleh. Tema kefahaman murid prasekolah dalam kajian ini dilihat berdasarkan kecerdasan logik Matematik. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa terdapat lapan (8) tema kefahaman murid terhadap konsep nombor dan operasi tambah iaitu; menggunakan simbol abstrak untuk mewakili sesuatu konsep atau objek, melihat sesuatu berdasarkan kuantiti, menunjukkan kemahiran dalam menyelesaikan masalah secara logik, melihat perhubungan antara sesuatu objek, menggunakan angka secara efektif dalam aktiviti mengira, menghasilkan reka cipta baharu,  memanipulasi angka, kuantititi dan operasi sesuatu formula dalam Matematik, dan berkomunikasi dengan guru melalui pelbagai cara. Kesimpulannya, dapatan kajian ini menunjukkan bawah murid-murid di Marang, Terengganu mempunyai kecerdasan logik Matematik walaupun masing-masing berada dalam kumpulan tahap yang berbeza. Mereka dapat memahami konsep nombor dan operasi tambah yang diperkenalkan oleh guru. Murid-murid tersebut mengamati sesuatu perkara dalam pembelajaran Matematik secara saintifik dan empirik.
