ABSTRACT
The Arabic language plays an important role in the context of religion, education, and culture. As a country with a majority Muslim population, the teaching and learning of Arabic in Malaysia focus on the understanding of the Quran and Islamic studies. Therefore, Arabic is included as one of the subjects in the national curriculum in secondary schools and higher education institutions to achieve Arabic language proficiency. However, studies have found that students' achievements in Arabic in Malaysia are still at an unsatisfactory level. Factors influencing student achievement include different backgrounds and interests. Thus, this study examines the influence of interest and the factors affecting it on the achievement of Arabic language skills among Malaysian Higher School Certificate (STPM) examination candidates. The study involves STPM candidates taking the Arabic language subject in secondary schools in Terengganu, Malaysia. Data were collected through surveys and analyzed using descriptive and correlation statistical methods. Through descriptive and inferential statistical analysis, this study explores the relationship between the level of interest and achievement in the subject. The findings show a significant correlation between the level of interest and academic performance in the Arabic language subject. Although students showed varying levels of interest, their achievement in the Arabic language subject at the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) level was found to be moderate on average. Additionally, the study results indicate that there are two main factors influencing interest: personal relevance and positive learning experiences. Thus, this study emphasizes the importance of fostering student interest through other influencing factors such as effective teaching methods and the creation of a conducive learning environment to improve Arabic language skills among STPM candidates.
